Sustainability

“It is important to ensure that we take a sufficient pause to reflect on our progress and our impact, and that we remain on track to achieve our sustainability targets. Ultimately, this is the way we can drive a truly sustainable business, benefiting our staff, customers, and community, while reducing our environmental footprint. ”

Richard Costin, COE

We have seen great developments in all aspects of sustainability at Bisley. Here’s a few numbers from 2024:

People and planet are at the core of our principles towards becoming a more sustainable business.

People

Our partnerships with charities are incredibly important to Bisley. Here are some of the charities we have been working with.

bigmoose

+

In 2024, we began our collaboration with bigmoose, a mental health charity that provides therapy to anyone who is struggling, with no qualifying criteria nor medical referral required. We have committed to working with them on various initiatives including giving talks to our employees to highlight the support available, sponsoring bigmoose events, and helping to furnish their offices.

Having established an initiative with the British Heart Foundation to offer a free furniture collection service to our customers, helping us to develop a more circular business. Our partnership with BHF continues to grow, with us also directly providing furniture that we are unable to reuse ourselves that can be sold to help fund lifesaving research.

Our customers

We’ve also invested in our physical spaces, with newly refurbished showrooms that were showcased during a range of events throughout the year. Notable highlights included the popular darts event and several Nerdworking gatherings, providing fantastic opportunities for networking and building effective relationships.

Planet

It’s very important to understand our impact on the environment, from our operations onsite to how we ensure our customers can recycle or reuse our products. Information on our emissions, energy consumption and waste and circularity can be found below:

Emissions

Our scope 1 and 2 emissions have seen a fast decline in recent years from the baseline year of 2018. We are keen to keep this going in the near future by further reducing these emissions throughout our operations.

Carbon intensity is a key indicator of how a business is performing in terms of emissions based on turnover. The carbon intensity we use is measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide per million pounds of turnover (tCo2e/mil).

We’ve made significant strides towards our target of net-zero by 2050, however we are under no illusion there is still plenty to do.

See our sustainability report for further information.

Energy consumption

Year on year we have been making changes to our operations to improve efficiency and reduce our emissions at the same time, including the installation of more efficient ovens for our powder paint process and installing new insulation to our offices to improve heat retention, further improvement can be found on our most recent report.

Waste and circularity

Reduce

Optimizing our packaging has become an ever increasing importance since new legislation like the extended producer responsibility has seen businesses like Bisley take on 100% of the responsibility for what we put into the waste stream.

We have been reviewing our e-commerce packaging and seeing how we can both streamline the processes in our operations to reduce time of packaging and to create a better customer experience.

See our latest report for more information.

Reuse

Waste to Wonder, Wastesavers, and the British Heart Foundation have been at the forefront of ensuring both our furniture and the furniture of offices we fit out are reused if possible and not sent to landfill.

See our latest report for more information.

Recycle

We’re continuously working to improve our recycling efforts across all areas of the business. Through partnerships with organisations like Wastesavers, we send materials such as plastic bottles, cans and paper to charities who will benefit from the value of these products to help the community.

Treeapp

Our partnership with Treeapp has developed over the years since we partnered with them and we are keen to develop this further with new initiatives, by incorporating the customers into this experience.

This year, we focused on supporting projects in Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia and Madagascar.
